Musculoskeletal Injuries

Affliction to the muscular or skeletal systems are the major part of the injuries sustained during sports. It can also be caused ever so often by domestic accidents, work-related injuries from strenuous activity and cumulative physical trauma / repetitive strains caused by lack of physical fitness.

What are the common musculoskeletal injuries?

Any injury involving muscles, bones, joints, tendons or even cartilages can be considered a musculoskeletal injury. They can affect all parts of the body.

Neck and shoulder injury

Neck and shoulder injuries are very common. They usually result from prolonged time in a bad standing or sitting posture, but can also be due to a repetitive rotating movements or a sudden jerk or impact.

Wrist and hand injury

Wrists and hand injuries are also very common and a significant part of musculoskeletal injuries. Some sports are more at risk than others: boxing, kickboxing, grappling, skating but also tennis or badminton are riskier for your hands and wrists as the wrist and hand have to withheld the sudden impact of a fall or a collision.

Leg and foot injury

Leg and foot injuries can be caused by some contact in sports, like in muay thai, football or BJJ, but they can also be the consequence of a lack of physical fitness or accidents. Most leg and foot injuries can benefit from passive physiotherapy treatment like the majority of musculoskeletal injuries, following with active functional movement therapy to condition the muscular system when the pain has diminished.

Spinal injury

The spine is a complex and robust central structure in our body. However, some movements are likely to put it in a disabling position. To displace the joints or discs in the spine requires a high impact trauma or unbalanced weight distribution during lifting. Minor strain or sprain to the spine's tendons and muscles can be sustained working in the garden at home or working out without proper warm up.

Physiotherapy after spinal injuries aids in managing the pain and promoting blood flow and healing. Regardless of how the injury was sustained, the cause is often rooted in lack of strength from your core muscles and / or bad structural alignment, which can both be fixed with active physiotherapy or functional movement sessions to safely develop the spinal range and durability.

Elbow injury

Elbow injury is more common than people think and can come from prolonged resting on a folded elbow while working on the computer to sports such as tennis, golfing or weightlifting where the elbow can end up in a twisted or hyperextended position. Reinforcing elbows to avoid injuries can be a part of a functional physiotherapy movement program.

How do you sustain a musculoskeletal injury?

Musculoskeletal injuries can be caused by several factors:
Sport injury: the repetitive motions and actions over a period of time from various sports can be a big source of trauma to any of the muscular or skeletal systems.
Lack of physical conditioning, some muscles need to be developed for some activities to be done safely.
Simple / complex dislocation, excessive rotation or hyper-extensions from a high energy impact (eg. a fall during domestic work / gardening)
Prolonged improper working / seating positions without adequate support.
In some rare cases as a secondary injury, musculoskeletal trauma may develop while recovering from an initial injury.

How can physiotherapy help with musculoskeletal injuries?

Physiotherapy can help you deal with your musculoskeletal injury in numerous ways:
Programmed electrical stimulation, infrared and ultrasound treatments can ease your pain
Sport massages can help you relax your tense muscles and relieve stiff joints
Functional movement training rehabilitates normal function of the affected muscular / skeletal system in a safe and controlled manner.
