ULTRASOUND TREATMENT

Ultrasound therapy is a popular treatment that is regularly used in our physiotherapy sessions. They involve the use of ultrasound waves that creates two different effects: thermal, and non-thermal.

What are ultrasound treatments in physiotherapy?

Therapeutic ultrasound treatment uses a probe that transfers ultrasound rays or high-frequency sound waves delivered deep into the tissue / muscles. The absoption of the waves gives a thermal effect which increases the blood flow and relaxes tense muscles.

It is similar to TENS and is also a non-evasive treatment method. Instead of pads, it involves a base of hypo-allergenic gel to create a friction-free surface for the probe to glide across the skin.

Which injuries can be treated with ultrasound treatments?

Ultrasound treatments can be used on all injuries that can benefit from a blood flow increase and reduction of muscle spasms. As such, ultrasound physiotherapy works well on the following conditions:
Sport injuries causing inflammation / swelling
Joint pains (eg. in the shoulder, knee, elbow or wrist)
Nerve injuries (eg. in the lower back or neck)
Tendinitis
Bone fractures healing

Main benefits of therapeutic ultrasound

The ultrasound treatment in physiotherapy is painless and allows your tissues to be stimulated with fine soundwaves vibration.

This stimulation of the cell membrane is meant to open up the vessels and deliver more oxygen to help cell repair.

The ultrasound treatment can be used in combination before a sport massage or a functional movement session to complete your sport physiotherapy program.

How safe are ultrasound treatments?

Ultrasound treatments are very safe for most people. The only contraindications of ultrasound therapy are:
If you are wearing an electronic or metal implants near the area that needs to be treated
Cancer patients or suspected cancer over the area
Someone with a heart or circulatory problem (eg. deep vein thrombosis)
Recently had an infection / still bleeding in the area
Sensitive skin (that can cause allergies to the ultrasound gel) or poor skin surface conditions from abrasion or a recent wound
If you are not in these categories, then ultrasound treatment is very safe for you.
